Medical units at Varna beaches operate at reduced capacity

Paramedic units will remain on duty at the Zlatni Pyassutsi sea resort until the end of the month despite the steadily dwindling number of tourists, Bulgarian media reported.

Holidaymakers usually start to depart after the first week of September, a trend that intensifies after September 15 as the new school year begins but medical units will remain along the Varna beaches for another week. Paramedics will be on duty at Zlatnu Pyassutsi until the end of the month – although at reduced capacity.

Holidaymakers are warned, however, that aid centres at the St Konstantin, Kabakoum and Asparahouvo are being closed completely, according to the head of the St Klementina hospital Ivan Ivanov.

The St Klementina hospital allocated 46 staff, including 11 doctors, 25 nurses, six drivers and four mobile units to serve the Varna beaches during the 2010 summer season. Medical units were allocated to 23 different beaches in total.

According to the report, official statistic of doctors' workload for the season is yet to be assessed but preliminary information indicates that units were involved in "
hundreds of incidents of which seven were fatal"
, Dnevnik daily said.

"
All incidents were caused by excessive use of alcohol, overeating and general disregard for safety rules, as well as swimming at un-patrolled beaches or after the medical units' shift
