Hi Guys

Thanks a million Ash pictures are great, there are some more on the website Please visit the website, have a good look round, would be obliged if you would also sign the Guestbook too, Thanks

Well now things are happening here again. Firstly my friend at Gap has contacted me again and said she has 50 to 70 bags of clothes for us yippee!!!! :hello2: This is brilliant news, now we can help the Woman's Refuge too.

Secondly, I have written to all the local schools in Silistra to ask if they would help us fill a normal size cardboard box with good for one of the Orphanages, the Refuge Centre, the Home for the Elderly or an establishment that they know of themselves. So far I have 4 schools who will participate.

This is a real break through and we are just delighted. It's is a very small task and if every child or even half the children bring one small item of toiletries, clothing, toys, games books etc into school, the box would be filled in no time. Then they will let me or the organisation who will collect in time for Christmas Eve. The children will feel great knowing they helped others who are in desperate need, also this will bring awareness to the needs of these establishments and perhaps they can do this on a regular basis, who knows? maybe for Easter and Christmas. For every school that participates I will name them on our website.

This really is such a simple idea that anyone can do it - I have written to the shops and the business in Silistra also, not heard anything yet mind, but I will keep trying. 👍 We have made friends with various other establishments and again there is no reason why they cannot help us do this so I have asked for their help too , again awaiting a reply. Even you guys could organise something like this in your own area. I see Villyman and his Mayor friend has had a good response from their visit to our Garden Party at the Silistra Orphanage. The Mayor collected some clothing and ask Villyman to accompany him to the local Orphanage where they live so he could give them the clothing. :hello2: I explained my idea to Villyman and he will see if they can do the same in their area too. So some good positive feedback.

Thirdly we are going into the supermarket bag packing again in Dec, this should generate funding for the new floors and internal doors for the Orphanage.

Fourthly: My work has agreed we can hold a booksale in the main Reception area, plus they will provide us with 200 books free. Again, funds will go towards the new floors/doors. Of course the website is still open for anyone who would like to make contributions - we are always really glad to accept donations.

I left 3 crates of books with Bulgariabill and Sue has now started a swap shop and charges a small fee they have now raised around 25leva - so well done guys!! you are doing brilliantly. John & Linda of UK Foods Warehouse also have a crate of books which they are trying to get rid of for us too, so by Sept, if all goes well should have a little bit more in the pot.

Mr Oddy has started his Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme last Friday - He was there for 3.5 hours, the poor love was shattered when he got home. He slepted for 2 hours :love4: He still has trouble with his breathing, but I understand this programme will help him. Unfortunatly he was completely worn out the next day too :tongue3:- so I guess it's a matter of taking it slowly. Other than that things are going well. I will be contacting all my suppliers again in the new year - give them a little break from me now :drunken_smilie: :laughing9: We will also be on the look out for someone to transport goods for us therefore, I will have to write to the haulage companies again. if you know of anyone who might help us, please let me know. We will also be looking our for blankets and linen for the Home for the Elderly, so will start searching in the new year.

Lastly: Bgscot came down to visit us this weekend, Bless him he brought 100's of CD's for our shoeboxes next year and 16 packed of disposables nappies and some footwear too. He is such a lovely chap - thanks a million times over, you are a little darling :love10:

So that is it for now - I will keep you updated on our progress, but please do remember to check the website from time to time.

Oddy :

Hi Bernie that's incredible, looking at some of the donations your getting your going to need and armed escort to Bulgaria seriously though when you start to look at whats being given it all adds up to a valuable cargo so whoever takes it over to Bulgaria will need some serious vetting unless it's someone you know, anyway once again you 2 you are both keep it up and lets see what we can all do to help these dreams come true, which reminds me how is Doogle

Guys for your wonderful comments [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] you are all so very kind we are just two ordinary people just trying to help those who are less fortunate than ourself. It is just fantastic how supportive our suppliers have been this year and we are only in January.

I will be speaking with the Captain 1st week in Feb re the storage, really hope I can talk him into helping us again this year - I must say The TA have been brilliant, so keep your fingers crossed.

Ash you are right - will need armoured truck company so if anyone knows of one please do let me know

Sarah you had better write at least 4 letters a week just so you get noticed and I will most definatly watch the Queens Christmas speech this year.

The best news of all is We have found the disabilities Orphanage/home in Silistra [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] so now I have a friend finding out some info for us, than when Dougie goes over, the end of Feb he will be able to visit and check it out for himself. It has only taken us two years to find this so I guess they too will be having a share of the goods. God!!! life just get better and better. January 2010 Update Bulgarian Orphanage Silistra

Hello Guys

You might want to get yourself settled, as this is a little long this time

We are at the end of January already and things are going really well for us with the collection of goods for the Dimcho Orphanage, the 2 Baby Orphanages and the Womans refuge Centre. There has been no funds donated, but we have had lots of goods donated and we will be doing fundraising events over the next few months. Also on Thursday 25th Feb the Take a Break story will be published - looking forward to that.

Andy at Tee Kay Packaging Fengate supplied us with 147 boxes which again is fantastic!! Thanks a million Andy, you are a star!!! Special thanks also to Dave at Wolseley Orton S/gate for the boxes you gave us. Both these Guys are brilliant! Without their help, we would be really stuck, so well done and thanks a million times over. Your contributions plays a huge part in our organisation plans.

The clothes Gap send us in Dec have all been boxes now, they filled 59 boxes. Gap are just out of this world - absolutely wonderful!!! Next has sent us 120 pairs of trainers from tots to about 6 year old. That is just fantastic!! indeed,. Both companies have been very supportive to us again this year.. Thanks a million. We still have a long way to go re clothing/footwear as we need good clean quality clothes for the teenagers too, for both boys and girls - so if you can help or know of anyone I can write to, for help, please let me know.

The Home for the Elderly: Well, we have not had much luck finding the much needed blankets and linen for them yet, but we will keep trying. However, we have got a new knitting project on the go, whereby, if we provide the materials ie wool and knitting needles the ladies in the Home will knit garments for the children in the Orphanages and other establishments, including the children from the poor villages around - But we have to get wool donated. Hence I have asked on Freecycle, Netmums and written to every wool shop/manufacture we can find. So far, we have had a parcel deliver from Christine at Simplywool.com in Scotland. - Thank you Christine you are fantastic!!! Again if you can help or know of anyone I can contact, please let me know.

This project not only helps the community, it also give the ladies a purpose and something to look forward to, plus it will keep them active. They are really excited about it all and cant wait to get started. We are still looking for something that the men can do - I have written to various Airfix and model shops, but as yet, we have only had rejections but, I will keep trying. If you have any ideas, please let us know.

Our next big event is a bag packing at Tescos on Saturday 6th Feb We have about 10 volunteers so far, but we could do with some more, so if you have an hour or two to spare please consider helping us. But if you cannot do 6TH Then we have another one booked at Sainsburys on Sat 29th May again, let me know if you can help. Thanks for your consideration.

The book sale - I am real sorry I have no update on this yet, I keep asking at work when we can have it , but as yet, not had a reply. I am now thinking this will not be an option after all however, I will try asking once more and see if they will help.

Now, we have an offer from a lovely lady called Denise, again from Freecycle who owns a caravan in Scotland that she rents out. In Dec she donated a one week holiday from 3rd to 10 July or any week in Sept or Oct to us to raffle or auctions. Denise and her family would like to donate to proceeds of this week to us for the Bulgarian Orphanage Appeal. As you can imagine, this is a fantastic offer. What a wonderful lady, thank you so much. Denise has said ,the normal terms and conditions apply to renting and site passed can be purchased there if required, for around £23. The only difference is, instead of paying the agency, the payment will be make to the Bulgarian Orphanage Appeal - Below is the link to the caravan information. If you feel you would like to put in a bid for this, than please email me back headings Holiday Donations with your name, amount in your party and your bid. Thanks and happy bidding.

[url=http:][You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Just copy and paste to Google.

Jody Atkins is another one of our helpers who is also working to support us where possible. Jody is an Interior Designer and her plan is to Freecycle the goods from the site and whatever she saves on skip fees she will donate to the Bulgarian Orphanage Appeal. Again this is wonderful and what a fantastic idea. I will let you know how it progresses. Well done Jody!! Thank you so much.

The Shoebox Appeal: We will be doing the shoeboxes for the children in the Dimcho should be around 106+ But it is too much for us to do them for the other establishments therefore, we thought we could collect goods for each of them and put into one/two large boxes - Then they can save these boxes till Christmas and every child will have a gift. The same for the children in the Womans refuge and perhaps a special box for the mums with pretty things like sprays, soaps, perfumes, all toiletries. Then we have the Home for the Elderly could give them things to keep them warm, slippers, socks, gloves and toiletries also things like cards, dominos, complete puzzles etc its a long l day when you have nothing to do.

Thank to everyone who helps us and in particular to Elly, who has now offered to help with the research for us. To Joanne, always ready to help with her little van, to Cheryl for all her support and to Catherine and Margaret for the mountain of baby stuff they both brought to us recently. Margaret has been with us now for a few years and continues to help where possible. She has knitted scarfs and is now knitting little chicks and filling them with chocolate eggs. Thank you, Margaret, you are a real diamond!! Although I am no sure the choc eggs will ever reach Bulgaria if they are delivered here!!!! (No only kidding)

Catherine has been wonderful, she has only just joined us, but she has already filled 9 boxes with clothes and toys. from her beautiful daughter Gracy. Thanks to everyone who has helped and are continuing to supported us. You have all been just fantastic!!! Without your help and support these children would only exist, now, for the first time, they are living and enjoying the gifts you all donate. So from all of them and from Dougie and myself thank you for your kindness and spreading happiness where normal life really is grim and very much make do. If you think you can help us in any way or have any ideas, please do get in touch. Please also tell your friends and family as they may wish to help with fundraising events too.

Just to let you know we will also be doing another Garden Party hopefully Sunday 26th Sept but the date has to be confirmed - would really appreciate seeing you guys there for support.

Thank you all once again, you are all fantastic!!!!

Berni & Dougie xx g

PostSubject: New Project for 2010 for Silistra Orphanage   Sat Mar 13, 2010 12:26 am

Hi Guys

Feb has been a very slow month, not much happened really, see below.

Storage
We have all our goods ready and waiting to be stored unfortunately the TA cannot help us with storage this year, which is a shame as they have been brilliant. I have rang everyone from council to military services to self storage companies but we cannot get help. So, if you know of anyone who can help with donated storage until Sept , please do get in touch. We really appreciate it very much indeed.

Book sale
We have had confirmation that my place of work will allow us to hold a book sale to raise the funds towards the transport and the various renovations needed at the Orphanage. We have agreed the book sale will be held on 1st April. It is only open to staff so we will see how it goes. We have been donated lots of books and CD from Freegle and friends, which hopefully will sell, but if not ,we will take them to Bulgaria and ask for donations from the expats at our Garden Party. So fingers crossed all goes well.

Easter Chicks
Margaret our very good friend and avid supporter, again comes from Freegle has been knitting little chicks and putting a little cream egg inside. She raise a total of £35.50 when she took them to friends - This is a fantastic amount, well done Margaret!! You are a star! Myself and my friend Maureen have been knitting them too and we will bring them to the book sale on 1st April hopefully people will make donations - Oh they are so cute.

The wool project
We have a large box of wool now, but for the project we really need lots more. We have written to all the wool companies but so far only one company has replied and that is Simplywool.com in Scotland. The have been fantastic and send us a bag of wool and Christine also said she would start collecting and send what she can before the load is transported to Bulgaria. Thank you Christine, you have been wonderful! We will keep trying various other companies and of course we have the Freegle members, who have already given us some wool and needles. So if you can help please do get in touch.

People can also knit square for us and the ladies in the home can sew them together and make blankets - We also need lots and lots of good quality clean single blankets, which I will put an appeal our for in due course. We have such a long way to go yet with the wool. Again if you can help or know of anyone who can please do contact us. Special thanks to Elly who is always there to help out and support us. You are a little treasure! thanks.

Donations
A company called Great Gizmos in Crawley kindly send us a box of items for our shoeboxes, this is just fantastic - various items like moulding/bead kits, small board games, novelty handbag notebooks little cup cakes trinket cups and such. They are just lovely and the children will adore them - So thanks a million to Emma and Great Gizmos for helping us out Your donation will make so many children happy.

Also Hush Puppies donated 3 boxes of shoes to us they are mostly for the younger children and another box for the teenage girls although there was also some for the boys too. They are just fantastic so thanks to Sarah and the MD at Leicester for you wonderful donations. And of course a very special thanks to Bruce Dunn our very good friend from Scotland who offered to pick the shoes up on his way down to P'Boro from Scotland - Bruce you are wonderful and truly our guardian angel. Thanks a million time over.

Thanks also to Jenny and her staff at Tesco for allowing us into the store to bag pack. We raised a grand total of £308. which is just fantastic and will help us with the transport cost or the various renovations. Looking forward to the next visit.

Take a Break Magazine
Well I am sure you have all seen the story in Take a Break magazine - If not it is on the website under the photo gallery. It appears to be based around us, so you have an insight as to how things started and of course our plans for this year. The fee they will give for the article will go directly to the Orphanage fund for the transport and we will have various other fund raising events throughout the coming months and hopefully we will try to raise the transport costs. Although not sure there will be much, if anything left over for the renovations needed - but we will see how it goes. God is good.

The Garden Party
We have finally been given a date for the Garden Party at the Orphanage which is on Saturday Sept 25th from 1pm we do hope we get a lot more British & Scottish there this year. We had fantastic support from 18 couples last year. Also a friend William and his wife Jo from Shuman came and brought their local mayor and friends too. They were very impressed at what we were doing. A few weeks later William send me an email to say that, his visit had a spin off effect with the Mayor as he came to William house saying he had some good for the children in the Shuman Orphanage. He asked William & Jo to visit the Orphanage with him. This again, was fantastic new - The children were delighted with the gifts, even though they were feeling poorly at the time. William and Jo said it was fantastic to be able to help a very worthy cause. Well done guys! You did great. Dougie and I hope to have a few boxes we can donate to them this year too.

So you see, the word is spreading and people are beginning to help various other organizations, which is exactly what we set out to achieve. We will also check if we can organize with the various companies and Rotary club etc in Silsitra, if they can contact the local companies to see if they would fill a box of goods and send to the poor in the villagers and various other organizations. I hope to be visiting the local schools to speak with the directors about the children helping too..

Well that is if for now - We will just keep trying to find storage and hope someone will help us. I will keep you updated. Thanks again to all you lovely people who have helped and continue to help us, You are just fantastic and we could not do this without you.
