Heavy Snow Closes Bulgaria's Sofia Airport, Varna Port

Heavy snow and strong wind caused the closing of the Sofia International Airport and the port in the Black Sea city of Varna, the Bulgarian News Agency has announced.

The track at the Sofia International Airport is under cleaning. A change in the situation is expected around noon.

The port in Varna is closed for all vessels until the speed of the wind, which is currently 14-15 m/s, drops.

The snow cover in Varna reached 15 cm. The traffic police registered a record-high number of car accidents in the past 24 hours - 82, in which two pedestrians have been hurt. Their lives are out of danger.

The roads across the country are passable in winter conditions. There are icy sections in some places, which are being cleaned and sanded.

The road Aksakovo-Kichevo in north eastern Bulgaria is closed. All trucks moving along the road Provadia-Aytos must have chains and be without trailers.

Code Orange, which signifies “dangerous weather”, has been raised in five regions in the country – Silistra, Dobrich, Varna, Burgas and Shumen. Blizzards and drifts are expected, the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has announced.

According to the meteorologists, South eastern Bulgaria faced the largest snowfall on Thursday.

Winter Strands Hundreds at Sofia Airport

Hundreds of passengers are stranded at the airport of Bulgaria's capital Sofia Friday, due to inclement weather, Darik radio reports.

Flights to Frankfurt are cancelled, while the one to Amsterdam is over four hours late now. The latter is used by many passengers to connect to US-bound flights.

A number of other flights are also delayed and it is not yet known when the airport will resume normal schedule.

The Bulgarian carrier "
Bulgaria Air"
already announced they do not reimburse passengers for stay and accommodations when there are force major circumstances, but would provide food and beverages to those who have already checked in.

The delays and the cancellations have been triggered by bad weather all over Europe. The Amsterdam airport only services a minimum number of flights – 20 per hour.

If a flight is delayed more than five hours, passengers can decide not to board the plane and will receive reimbursement for the full amount of the ticket.

The airport of the Black Sea city of Varna was closed early Friday morning.
