Bulgaria's fuel prices soar on global oil shocks

The impact of the sharp rise in global oil prices, prompted by the political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, has spread to Bulgaria over the past month, with fuel prices at local petrol stations increasing by 10 stotinki a litre.

Since the beginning of the year, fuel prices have grown by between 20 stotinki and 30 stotinki, or about 10 per cent, on average to between 2.40 leva and 2.60 leva a litre.

Bulgarian fuel prices have now surged to their highest level in the past two years, nearing the record rates seen in the summer of 2008, when global oil prices stood at over $147 a barrel.

On February 24, brent crude prices continued to trend higher on the international markets, hitting $119 a barrel before falling back to $115.

The rise in fuel prices is affecting most severely the transport and agriculture sectors in Bulgaria and has made some the companies increase the prices of their products and services, according to a survey by Dnevnik.

Economists, however, said that the higher fuel prices would not lead to a rise in inflation and projected that the price shock would be temporary.

I have one of these too they are easy to get but I find I'm always looking for the right place to use it and sometimes it's cheaper in other places even with the discount card.

I filled both my 4wd's a couple of days ago..total around 750 litres and used the card and the 14 stotinki per litre discount came in very handy. I 've just returned [two hours ago] from travelling around southern BG and the fuel prices in EVERY place varied only by two stotinki per litre. That was from Plovdiv, up to VT, over to Varna, down to the Greek border, over to Sofia and back to Plovdiv and the the price of diesel varied from 2.68 to 2.70 per litre.

The card works for me.

Diesel Prices in Bulgaria Up BGN 0.02 after Excise Tax Increase

Fuel prices in Bulgaria have registered a slight increase since the beginning of 2013.

The price increase came as no surprise to drivers as excise tax rates on diesel went up from BGN 630 to BGN 645 per 1000 litres on January 1, 2013.

Retail diesel prices added BGN 0.02 to an average BGN 2.55 per litre.

The most common type of gasoline, A95 H, kept trading at BGN 2.49 per litre.

Diesel prices were last changed on December 6, when the rates dropped by BGN 0.05 to BGN 2.53 per litre.

On December 6, gasoline prices dropped by BGN 0.05 to BGN 2.48 per litre.

Drivers said that the latest fuel price increase would not affect them seriously, yet small filling stations claimed they were experiencing an outflow of customers which had started even before the 2013 price update.

Filling station assistants told Darik radio Friday that people were filling up for less.

Meanwhile, it emerged that filling stations in Bulgaria had been fined a total of over BGN 1 M for offering low-quality and diluted fuels.

It was reported that the share of low-quality fuels was decreasing.

According to reports of private TV station bTV, in 2012, the share of low-quality fuels amounted to less than 3% of the total, compared to a share of over 6% in 2011 and a share of 20% some 10 years ago.
