when travelling from one country to another and you have a little more than the 10 thousand euros which is the allowed limit, or a few more cigarettes, who do you declare to, customs of the country you are leaving or the country you are arriving in. or both. having watched the programme border police and seen peoples property confiscated, i would like to know. g

Difficult question I always stick to the limits it pays in the long run because if you do get stopped you either have to pay the tax if your lucky or you loose it?

I think that Starlite is asking if they are a little over not how much is allowed, ciggys you have 3,200 each as I am sure you know, I doubt very much if you are only a couple of box's over that they will even check. Money must be declared in the country that you are leaving

Below is guidelines

When you need to declare cash
You only need to declare cash if you are carrying 10,000 euros or more (or the equivalent value in other currencies) and you are:

•entering the UK from a country outside the EU
•leaving the UK to travel directly to a country outside the EU
If you are entering or leaving the EU through an EU country other than the UK, the declaration is made in that country.

Definition of EU
When declaring cash the EU is:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (including the Canary Islands), Sweden and the United Kingdom (not including the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands).

Definition of cash
The term 'cash' covers:

•notes and coins in any currency
•bankers' drafts
•cheques of any kind, including travellers' cheques

we never declare anything unless they ask. My friend has all her surplus cigs which she honestly declared at the romanian border confiscated by the romanian border control officer. He also fined us for having too much car insurance. So now I just hand over the passports and nothing else. ::
