Yes it can be a bit hit and miss,we forgot to pay last month they turned up last week we thought to check the meter and the switched it off and put a seal on the on off switch,so off to the post office we went, she said post office Yambol and would not let us pay,so off we go to Yambol paid the bill then had to take the reciept to EVN main office which is next door to Billa supermarket showed we had paid, then had to pay 20 Lev for an engineer to come out to reconnect us,i dont think we will forget again took about 4 hours.certainly a learning curve

Different areas different customs.
We live in a small village near Radnevo Stara Zagora.

Electricity. The girl who reads the meter normally brings the bills which are left at the village hall for us to pay.

Water. The Lady who reads the meter also collects the money you pay a month in arrears, meter is not read in the winter months but you pay a set amount normally 9.5 lev a month.

Telephone. Most villagers that apply for a phone are now given a phone which is basically a mobile, it is wireless apart from power cable but has a battery so will still work for power cuts.

BTC are in the process of replacing all analogue phones with this service, we receive a bill by post which we pay at the post office.

Electric meters in most villages are now mostly attached to lamp posts outside your property, or similar location. We were not in Bulgaria when meters were moved so they couldn't do ours which is still attached to the house, so we always know when the meter is being read.

Internet. If you are in a village and do not have cable TV the chances are you will only get internet via mobile phone tecnology, you have a few choices but if you want a home phone then going for a home hub may be your best option, MTel and ViaCom are two company s that I know supply this.

TV, there are two suppliers we are aware of BUlsatcom, and ITV partner, both supply different levels of service so choose what is best for you, Both can give you Diema which show many premiership games.

There are companies that will set up a sky system but I do not know anything about this, perhaps someone can come on and give the info

Our chap reads the meter ... shakes his head and says it's not expensive and tells us the bill will be at the Post Office in two weeks.

Our Lady is very nice, but I have to read the meter as it's buried about 1.5 meters underground in the front courtyard! Again, bills arrive two weeks later in the Post Office. This is the same every single month, even if we have a meter of snow on the ground!

As for TV, telphone, internet and the rest ....

TV. We have a Bulsat package with 72 channels (Eurosports, CNN, Disovery, Sci-Fi, Hallmark, History, etc.) for around 20 leva per month.

Telephone / Internet. We have broadband ADSL connection from VivaCom which includes a landline telephone with free calls to Europe landlines up to 60 hours per month.

Mobile: We both have Vivacom mobiles with free calls between us for a set monthly rate.

We pay our bills via the bank. But what a strange way of running a business. Its a manual process so if the girl that does our account is off on holiday or sick it does not get done. Plus the account is linked to a debit card. The card went out of date and the bill was not paid. We had to notify them to get another card, plus we had to pay a service charge on top of the bill as the bill had not been paid even though there was plenty of money in the account to cover it A bit like a standing order but only if your card is in date

Our water bill is paid in a similar way but we have not seen a bill for nearly 3 years

Most of the estate agents advertise setting up the services, and include it in the price for their services. Our Electric was still in the name of the previous owner, when we went to EVN to get our name put on there was an outstanding bill. As it was only 20 LV we paid it, but it is something to watch out for. Most of the estate agents will rip you off regarding services, they charge a management fee then bung a local a few lev to tidy the garden, in the end we just took the basic manangement services, ie the bills were paid. We then found a local who looked after our garden and kept the proceeds, that is all the fruit was his and the green stuff was for his animals, when we settled here he showed us how to look after the plants and trees?
